Take the measuring, cutting and tabbing out of candle making with our ECO Pre-Cut Waxed Candle Wicks. Supplied already cut to length, wax-coated and fitted with a metal sustainer tab, these wicks are ready to secure into your candle container and centre before pouring.
A practical choice for small candle businesses, DIY candle makers, hobbyists and anyone producing candles in batches, pre-tabbed wicks can save valuable preparation time and help create a more consistent candle-making process. Simply choose the wick size suited to your container, attach the metal tab to the base of the vessel with a wick glue dot, straighten the wick and hold it in position with a metal or wooden wick centering tool.
These wicks can be used with soy wax, paraffin wax and gel wax, making them a useful option for makers who work with several types of candle wax. The wax coating helps the wick remain firm while you position it in the container, while the attached metal tab provides a flat base for securing it to the bottom of your jar, tin or glass.
With sizes available for containers from approximately 5cm to 10cm+ in diameter, it is easy to select a starting wick size for everything from smaller candle jars to wide container candles. They are particularly handy for small businesses creating multiple candle sizes, experimenting with new vessels or developing new fragrance collections without having to prepare each wick from scratch.
Because candle performance is affected by more than container diameter alone, the sizing chart below should be used as a starting guide rather than a guaranteed wick recommendation. Wax type, fragrance load, fragrance oil, dye, additives, container shape and even the finished candle formulation can change the way a wick burns. We always recommend carrying out a full burn test before producing candles for sale.
ECO Wick Size Guide
| Wick Size | Approx. Container Diameter | Suggested Use |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | Approx. 5cm | Small jars, tins and narrow candle containers |
| 35 | Approx. 6cm | Small to medium candle containers |
| 40 | Approx. 7cm | Medium candle jars and glasses |
| 45 | Approx. 8cm | Medium to larger candle containers |
| 50 | Approx. 8.5–9cm | Wider candle jars and containers |
| 60 | Approx. 10cm+ | Large and wide candle containers* |
*For particularly wide containers, a multi-wick setup may be more suitable than one larger wick. Burn testing will help determine the best wick quantity, size and placement for your particular candle.
How to Use Pre-Cut Candle Wicks
1. Prepare your candle container.
Make sure your jar, glass or tin is clean, completely dry and free from dust, oil or wax residue. A clean base gives the wick adhesive a better surface to grip.
2. Apply a wick glue dot.
Take a wick glue dot and press it firmly onto the underside of the metal tab attached to the wick. Peel away the backing if required, then position the wick in the centre of your candle container.
Press the metal tab firmly against the bottom of the vessel for a few seconds to make sure it is securely attached. For the best results, aim to position the wick as close to the centre as possible.
3. Straighten the wick.
Gently pull the wick upwards so that it is straight without pulling hard enough to loosen the metal tab from the bottom of the container.
4. Secure it with a wick centering tool.
Feed the top of the wick through your preferred metal wick centering tool or wooden wick centering tool. Position the tool across the top of the candle container so that the wick remains upright and centred.
A properly centred wick is important because an off-centre wick can cause one side of the candle to become hotter than the other and may contribute to uneven burning.
5. Pour your wax.
Prepare your soy, paraffin or gel wax according to the instructions for the wax and fragrance materials you are using. Once your mixture is ready, carefully pour it into the prepared container while keeping the wick centred.
Pour steadily around the wick and take care not to knock the centering tool out of position.
6. Allow the candle to set.
Leave the wick centering tool in place while the candle cools and sets. Avoid moving the container unnecessarily during this stage, as movement can shift the wick away from the centre.
7. Remove the centering tool and trim the wick.
Once the candle has fully set, remove the metal or wooden wick holder and trim the exposed wick to approximately 5mm before burning.
If you are making candles for sale, allow the candle to cure for the appropriate length of time for your chosen wax before completing your burn testing.
Why Choose Pre-Cut, Pre-Tabbed Wicks?
For makers producing candles regularly, preparing individual wicks can quickly become one of those small jobs that adds considerable time to a production session. These pre-cut candle wicks arrive waxed and fitted with metal tabs, so they can go directly from the pack into your prepared containers.
They are useful for batch candle making, product testing, craft-market stock, candle-making kits, small business production and DIY projects, and the range of available sizes makes it easier to work with different jar diameters without cutting and assembling your own wicks.
The pre-waxed finish also gives the wick additional stiffness, making it easier to thread through a wick holder and keep straight while pouring.
Suitable For
Soy wax • Paraffin wax • Gel wax • Container candles • Candle jars • Candle tins • DIY candle making • Small-batch candle production • Handmade candle businesses • Hobby candle makers • Candle testing and product development
Please Note
The diameter recommendations in the table are an approximate starting point only. There is no single wick size that can be guaranteed for every candle of a particular diameter.
Your final wick choice can be affected by the type and blend of wax, fragrance percentage, individual fragrance oil, colourants, additives, container diameter, container shape and candle formulation. Two candles made in the same jar can require different wicks if their formulations are different.
For this reason, burn testing is essential, particularly when making candles for sale. Test each wax, fragrance, wick and container combination as a complete formulation before beginning full production.
